Asha Jaoar Majhe: A Lyrical Portrait of Love and Labour

Asha Jaoar Majhe (Labour of Love) is a 2014 Bengali film directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta. The film tells the story of a married couple who live in the city of Calcutta, where they face the challenges of a spiraling recession and a precarious livelihood. The film has no dialogues, but relies on the expressive performances of the actors, the evocative cinematography, and the subtle sound design to convey the emotions and experiences of the characters.

The film follows the daily routines of the couple, who work in different shifts and rarely see each other. The husband (Ritwick Chakraborty) works as a printer in a newspaper office, while the wife (Basabdutta Chatterjee) works as a handbag maker in a factory. They wake up, eat, work, commute, shop, cook, clean, and sleep in a cycle of work and domestic chores, with only brief moments of intimacy and affection. They also face the uncertainty of losing their jobs, as factories shut down and newspapers reduce their circulation. Despite the hardships and monotony, they seem to possess a serene power and a quiet resilience, as they cherish their love and hope for a better future.

The film is inspired by the Italian short story "The Two Husbands" by Italo Calvino, which depicts a similar situation of two men who share a wife without knowing each other. The director Aditya Vikram Sengupta said that he wanted to explore the theme of love in the context of labour and recession, and how people cope with the changing socio-economic realities. He also said that he chose to make the film without dialogues because he wanted to focus on the visual and auditory aspects of filmmaking, and to create a universal language that transcends cultural barriers.

The film received critical acclaim and won several awards at various international film festivals. It won the Best Debut Director award at the Venice Film Festival, the Best Film award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, and the Best Director award at the Marrakech Film Festival. It was also India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 87th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The film was praised for its poetic style, its realistic portrayal of urban life, and its sensitive depiction of human relationships.

Asha Jaoar Majhe is available to watch on [Prime Video], [Apple TV], and [Archive.org]. It is a film that celebrates the labour of love in its truest sense, and offers a glimpse into the lives of two ordinary people who find extraordinary meaning in their mundane existence.
